Keeping chickens as pets have increased tremendously in popularity in recent years, as they are not only pets, they supply the owner with a steady stream of fresh and delicious eggs. The idea of keeping chickens can seem a little daunting to begin with, however when you get to grips with it, it is actually quite simple. To start with, chickens need to be kept outdoors in the garden, in a coop. As a rule of thumb, you should allow up to 1,000-1,300 cm2 floor area for each bird and it is always a good idea to buy a chicken house which has a run attached to it, so the birds can move around. Finally you will need a nesting box, where the hens will lay their eggs. In terms of other products you will need to keep chickens, of course a good quality diet is required, so layers pellet or mash will provide the nutrients required. In addition to this, grit will be required in order to help digest their food. Finally, feeders and drinkers are advised, as these can supply food and water constantly throughout the day and night.
