Made entirely from straw this product responsibly addresses many of the environmental and health issues surrounding traditional litter products.
Only the solids and worst of the wet patches need to be scooped out and replenished on a regular basis which means that SmartBedz is cost effective to use. No need to worry about smaller damp areas which will dry out naturally and still suppress odours. One 5kg bag of SmartbBedz cat litter will last around 50 days when used by one cat and the tray should only need emptying completely every 1.5 to 2 weeks making this very economical and easy to use. Our research also shows that used as a cat litter a 5kg bag of SmartBedz is equivalent to using approximately 35kg of an economy brand of cat litter when used in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.
SmartBedz is comprehensively dust extracted and heat treated during manufacture and as such should be suitable for pets and owners who suffer from allergies.
Should SmartBedz cat litter be spilled outside the tray the soft pellets are unlikely to damage wood or laminate floors making this product ideal for modern living.
If you are new to using SmartBedz for your cat you are probably best to use the 6mm pellets initially until your cat is used to the litter - this comes in the 5kg bags.
Directions for use
Do not use paper or litter tray liners.
Place a 1-3 cm layer of SmartBedz cat litter pellets in the tray.
Remove soiled content daily and replenish as required. Make sure you use a scoop with large enough holes to avoid waste - we recommend scoops with 11 or 12 mm square holes for best results.
Empty and clean litter tray when necessary.
Some cats may need time to get used to a new litter. If so, add a little of your existing cat litter on top of the SmartBedz pellets for a period of time.
Disposal
SmartBedz decomposes rapidly so disposal of the waste couldn't be easier. Simply compost, dig in, or flush away in small quantities (according to use and local regulations). Please be aware that pregnant and nursing women should avoid handling soiled cat litter.

After SmartBedz chicken litter is laid the pellets will gradually break down into an absorbent fibrous bedding - this breakdown can be accelerated if you wish by spraying a little water over the pellets before use. Only the heavily soiled areas and solids need to be scooped out and replenished on a regular basis which means that SmartBedz is cost effective to use. We have found with our own chickens that turning the litter occasionally freshens it up and helps the bed last longer. This is the same with drinker spills, SmartBedz can simply be turned and will dry out again. Whilst using SmartBedz over the past year it has been noticeable that we have had no problems with mite.

Place approximately 2cm of SmartBedz pellets in nest boxes and internal solid floors.

The SmartBedz brand has been developed by brother's Mark and Jeremy who were born and brought up in Suffolk on their parent's poultry farm. Other sidelines to this business were rearing turkeys and breeding rabbits and sheep. From an early age Mark and Jeremy would spend their spare time helping on the farm and learning how to look after all the various animals. It was in this environment that the brother's learnt to love and respect the English countryside and were taught the importance of preserving their heritage. Living on a farm pets always played an important part of family life as they still do. Today Jeremy and his wife have a smallholding where they keep chickens, turkeys, sheep and pigs amongst others as a hobby.
In 1985, after having followed their own chosen careers Mark and Jeremy decided to join forces in a new business and are still working together to this day. It was during this period, whilst wishing to diversify their company, that Mark and Jeremy realised there were real environmental issues that needed to be addressed in the production of cat litters.
Traditionally materials used for cat litter have consisted of or contain clays, silica's, sodium bentonite, perfumes, chemicals or synthetic additives which besides the environmental damage caused by their extraction can lead to respiratory problems. Much of the raw material for these litters is either mined (or even worse strip mined) and then needs to be disposed of in landfill sites - there have been claims that some of these materials are known carcinogens. Their research also found that many of the litters were bulky, dusty and rather ineffective in use. Further study and experimentation concluded that whilst there are now some more environmentally friendly products available on the market many of these do not generally perform very well. With consumer trends towards convenience, Mark and Jeremy spotted an opportunity for an environmentally friendly cat litter that would also be suitable as a bedding or litter for a range of other pets.
With their good knowledge base and proven attention to detail in business Mark and Jeremy set about finding a solution. The result was SmartBedz, a totally environmentally friendly and easily disposable litter made entirely from straw, itself an agricultural by-product.
Smartbedz straw pellets absorb urine extremely rapidly and are capable of locking in large quantities in their fine fibres. As a consequence urine is only exposed to oxygen for a very short period of time, dramatically slowing down the breakdown of the urine into ammonia by bacteria.
