Pet insurance

GJW Titmuss

Pet insurance has been around for almost sixty years now, it has grown in popularity as it helps to save money on sometimes extremely expensive veterinary bills. For example fixing your cat's broken leg can sometimes cost up to £800+. Moreover veterinary fees are expected to continue rising over the next few years. It has been estimated that over the course of a dog's life veterinary bills can reach up to £8,000+

Quite often a Pet insurance policy would cover things like vet's fees, treatment for long-term conditions, death by accident, dental treatment and expenses for lost or stolen pets. Some insurers also covers against things like behavioural problems, however it is always a good idea to do some research and find out exactly what each insurer covers against.

Many pet insurance contracts are on an annual basis with the cost of the insurance usually paid in instalments every month or a one-off charge when the policy is taken out.

It is important to remember that dogs cost more to insure that cats and other small animals. Costs do also vary depending on factors such as breed, age and previous health problems. Also costs can vary depending on where you live too. It has been estimated that every year roughly one in three cats and dogs become ill or suffer an injury. The good news it that survival rates are increasing year on year due to advancing technology. However this does cause the cost of these treatments/procedures to rise. So if your pet needed major surgery it could potentially end up costing you thousands of pounds.

Pet insurance can really take the worry and stress out of owning a pet. In reality it can be very affordable with some polices starting from a few pounds a month, enabling you to avoid some nasty surprises if they arise. Research has also shown that people are actually more likely to make a claim on their pet insurance that their car insurance.

There are many different policies out there and it is really worth conducting some research to find the most suitable policy for you. We have provided links below to some of the most competitive companies we have found.
